Spotted eagle rays live worldwide in tropical and warm waters, usually near coastlines and coral reefs. They can grow to a length of 16 feet and are able to leap their entire bodies out of the water when swimming close to the surface. These rays have venomous spines on their tails that are used in defense against threats. Classified as near threatened, their populations are in decline, with commercial fishing being a major cause.
