------------------------
Sandhill cranes are known for their teamwork during migration, traveling in large, organized flocks that can number in the thousands. They use thermal air currents to glide long distances, often flying in V-formations that reduce wind resistance and conserve energy. These migratory journeys, which can cover thousands of miles, require precise communication and coordination among flock members. Their distinctive trumpeting calls help them stay connected during flight and also serve to maintain social bonds within the flock. During winter and in stopover areas, sandhill cranes gather in large communal roosts, providing safety in numbers from predators. In addition to their cooperative behavior in migration and parenting, sandhill cranes engage in social activities like dancing, which strengthens pair bonds and helps maintain social harmony within the group.
