------------------------
River otters live in family groups that typically consist of a mother and her young. They are excellent swimmers and spend much of their time in water, where they hunt for fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic creatures. They communicate using vocalizations, body language, and scent marking, which helps them coordinate activities like hunting or alerting each other to potential dangers. River otters are known for their playfulness, frequently seen sliding down muddy or snowy banks, wrestling, and chasing each other– behaviors that not only strengthen social bonds but also help young otters develop crucial survival skills. Cooperation is especially evident when it comes to teaching the young how to swim, hunt, and navigate their environment. Otters work together to maintain and defend their territory, often grooming each other to reinforce social connections and ensure the health of their waterproof fur.
