Marine iguanas are the only lizard on Earth that spends time in the ocean. They live only on the Galapagos Islands, can spend up to 30 minutes at a time submerged, and they can dive more than 65 feet underwater. In order to prevent dehydration, they “sneeze out” excess salt their body collects through a nasal gland. Because of their small habitat and hunting by invasive species, they are considered vulnerable to extinction.
