Blue penguins, also know as fairy penguins or little penguins, are found on the coastlines of New Zealand and southern Australia. They are the small penguin species, growing to about 13 inches in height and weighs less than 4 lbs. Blue penguins spend most of their days at swimming and foraging at sea for small fish and squid. Each individual has its own call, used for courtship, defending territory, gathering together, or showing aggression. To prepare for molting on shore, they have to double their bodyweight beforehand. Molting gets rid of old and worn feathers, and during this process, they aren’t waterproof so they are unable to go hunt for food.
