The axolotl is a salamander that can only be found in the wild in the lakes and canals of Xochimilco, Mexico. It has the astonishing ability to regenerate body organs and limbs and can regrow a limb multiple times! It can also regenerate its heart, lungs, spinal cord, and parts of its brain. The feathery-looking branches on its head are actually gills. In 2010 the axolotl reached near extinction due to water pollution, habitat loss and invasive species such as carp and tilapia. They are currently listed as critically endangered.
