Tanukis, also known as Japanese raccoon dogs, are common in Japanese art, folkore, and pop culture. They are depicted as shapeshifters who are mischievous and jovial with the ability to spread good fortune and prosperity. These nocturnal animals are not closely related to raccoons, but are a member of the canid family. However, unlike dogs, and they are unable to bark and instead produce a high-pitched whine. Tanunkis are one of the few mammals to form lifelong bonds with their mates and they work together to raise their pups.
