Takins (pronouned tah-kins) live in China, Bhutan, India, and Myanmar. These herbivores will eat almost any vegetation that’s within reach! Takins are slow moving but can react quickly if angered or frightened. If they sense danger, takins warn others with a loud "cough" that sends the herd running for cover. In summer months, takins form large herds of up to 300 and migrate to higher elevations. During the winter, herds will separate and form groups of 20 individuals as they move to lower, warmer regions. In China they are considered a national treasure and have the highest level of legal protection there, though they are classified as endangered due to poaching and habitat loss.
